Car Insurance Smart (Car Insurance). Why do the current iconic American coupes cost so much less?

Why do the current iconic American coupes cost so much less? My car is a 2005 BMW 325 Ci and the sticker price was about $37,000 but a 2010 Chevy Camaro 2SS is only a little less than $34,000. That's a 2SS too, a regular 1LS isn't even $23,000. The Challenger starts at less than $25,000 and I think the Ford Mustang is also less than the $30k's. Is it because Chevrolet and Ford, or at least these cars, break down easily or need a lot of maintenance? For such a modern and high HP car(s), I don't get why they cost so much less than a 2005 BMW which isn't even in their class (325Ci not M3).

American cars do not hold their value as well as the expensive euro-cars. They also update American cars so quickly that the style is out of date before you make it off the showroom floor. BMW and the like only make subtle changes from year to year while Ford revamps the entire line or re badges them. Remember the Escort. You are comparing a luxury car to more of an economical performance car. Mustangs and Camaros were and are built for performance at an affordable price. BMW goes far beyond performance and goes in to reliability, quality and then performance. BMW puts a little more "attention to detail" to the end product then our American coupes. They charge foreign company's to import the cars, im not sure the exact amount, but that along with shipping the car over add up in price. Your buying the brand, like in your local market, do you get the generic brand or the name brand that cost 1.5 times the price. Inline 6 engines are also more expensive to produce because the block is longer than a v8, they are also high compression engines meaning they need more fine tuning, and higher quality engine components. Try driving one, you'll find out why they cost "so much less"....

Smart . How to Repair the Driver's Power Window in a 2001 Expedition

You're cruising down the highway in your 2001 Ford Expedition and you spot a rain squall just ahead. No problem, just power up the windows, slow down a little, turn on the headlights and motor on. But wait, your driver's side power window won't close and you arrive at your destination soaking wet. The power windows in all cars are subject to failure at any time because of wear and tear, faulty regulators, lift motors and electrical switches. It makes sense to know how to repair the power windows yourself and save $200-300 of additional repair shop costs.
Difficulty:Moderate
Instructions Things You'll Need
Philips head screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver
Small socket wrench set
Blue masking tape
Silicone spray
Small can of acetone
Small tube of gasket cement
Multimeter or 12 volt test light
19mm (3/4-inch) metal hole saw with an 8mm (1/4-inch) pilotSuggest EditsItem AddWhy is it necessary?DoneRepair Process

Step by Step :
1
Locate the malfunction. If the window switch makes no sound when it is activated with the ignition key turned on (motor off), the switch is either faulty or not receiving power. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry up the driver's master window switch plate and pull out the switches and attached electrical harnesses. Disconnect the driver's window switch plug and test the connection by touching a multimeter positive (red) probe to the plug contacts and the negative (black) probe to metal (ground). With the ignition key in the on position (motor off), the meter should register 12 volts. No reading indicates a blown fuse or a problem in the electrical circuit between the battery and the power input to the window switch plug.
2
Examine the window molding for damage or binding if the window won't move even though you hear the motor. Inspect the window channels for foreign material that may hinder free up-and-down movement. The window may have become misaligned or blocked by a broken or unglued channel molding. Most window track and molding problems can be fixed without removing the window or window regulator by re-gluing damaged molding with a good gasket cement, cleaning the window edges and channels with acetone and spraying the channels with silicone for lubrication.
3
Remove the driver's side inside door panel and plastic dust cover to access the window motor and regulator. First, use a small flathead screwdriver to pry off the sail-shaped panel (opposite the remote mirror) starting at the top edge. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove a hidden panel screw under the sail. Pry up the master window switch plate and disconnect all switches from their electrical connectors. Remove panel screw inside the switch housing and another inside the courtesy light housing after lens removal. Remove the inside door handle plastic trim plate by pulling the handle outward and prying up the plate. An exposed 9mm bolt can now be removed with a small socket wrench. Pull the door panel up and away from the door and disconnect the courtesy light plug and power mirror plug. Set the panel aside and carefully peel off the plastic dust cover.
4
Test the circuit between the power window switch and the window motor by reattaching the electrical connector plug to the window switch and disconnecting the window motor power cable plug. Turn ignition key to on position (motor off). Touch the multimeter red probe to each motor plug contact and ground the black probe on bare metal. Activating the window switch up or down should cause the meter to read 12 volts. No reading means a bad switch, assuming your first test (Step 1) found power to the window switch. If the test detects power at the window motor plug, but the window motor makes no sound when its reconnected and activated, the motor must be burned out.
5
Remove the window motor by using the hole saw centered over each of the three dimples in the door frame and cutting access holes to uncover the motor retaining bolts. Before bolt removal make sure the scissor-type window regulator arms are fixed to prevent sudden arm movement and possible injury caused by the uncoiling of the counterbalance spring. Use a socket wrench to remove the three bolts and replace the defective motor. To remove a damaged regulator, first manually close the window and tape it into position. Remove the two retaining bolts and extract the regulator assembly. Install new regulator and /or motor. Reconnect power to the switches and motor to test window movement before reassembling the door panel.

Smart . How to Replace a Window in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am GT

Damaged window glass is a potential safety hazard, as glass with nicks or cracks can easily break when the door is closed. Damaged glass can also visually affect a vehicle's image, especially when trying to show the vehicle for potential buyers. However, the window glass on a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am can easily be swapped by most vehicle owners within an hour. Although special care must be taken when handling the window glass, replacing the glass is a fairly straightforward process.
Difficulty:Moderate
Instructions Things You'll Need
Standard screwdriver
Phillips screwdriver
Torx bit set
Small pry bar
Socket set

Step by Step :
1
Place a standard screwdriver under the power door lock and power window switch. Pry the switch away from the door panel. Unplug the electrical connector from the rear of the switch and remove the switch.
2
Remove the three door panel retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver. One screw is located at the bottom of the armrest, one is located near the power window and power lock switch that was previously removed, another retaining screw is located behind the reflector near the rear of the door panel. Remove the reflector with a standard screwdriver to access the retaining screw.
3
Pull the door latch to the open position and remove the Torx retaining screw with a Torx screwdriver. Pry the door latch trim away from the door, unplug the electrical connector and remove the latch trim. Pry the plastic cover on the door pull with a standard screwdriver and remove the two retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
4
Place a standard screwdriver behind the side view mirror trim panel and pry the panel away from the door, dislodging the retaining clips on the rear of the panel. Remove the panel.
5
Place a small pry between the door panel and the door. Pry the door panel away from the door to dislodge the retaining clips located on the rear of the door panel. Work the pry bar around the perimeter of the door, dislodging all of the clips. Pull the door panel away from the door and remove it.
6
Peel the plastic water shield away from the door.
7
Lower the window glass, leaving the window glass-to-channel bolts accessible through the access hole. The bolts are located on the edges of the window glass. Remove the bolts with a socket wrench. Remove the window glass-to-regulator mounting bolts with a socket wrench.
8
Pull the weather sealing strip from the top of the window opening and remove it. Gently raise the glass through the window opening. Tilt the top of the window glass toward the outside of the vehicle, clearing the top of the door frame and remove it from the door.
9
Install the window glass-to-regulator plastic clips to the replacement glass if necessary using a Phillips screwdriver.

Step by Step :
10
Lower the replacement window glass into the window opening, tilting the top of the glass to clear the top of the door frame, then straightening the glass once it is clear of the frame. Be careful not to scratch the glass on the window opening. Lower the glass until it sits on the window regulator.

Step by Step :
11
Install the window glass-to-regulator bolts and window glass-to-channel mounting bolts with a socket wrench. Push the weather sealing strip onto the top of the window opening.

Step by Step :
12
Stick the plastic water shield to the door.

Step by Step :
13
Push the door panel against the door, aligning the retaining clips on the rear of the panel with the retaining holes on the door. Push each of the clips into the holes on the door, attaching the panel to the door.

Step by Step :
14
Push the side view mirror trim panel against the door, engaging the retaining clips on the rear of the panel with the retaining holes on the door.

Step by Step :
15
Install the two screws near the door pull and the three retaining screws in the armrest, window switch hole and behind the reflector with a Phillips screwdriver. Push the plastic cover over the door pull retaining screws. Push the reflector over the retaining screw near the rear of the door panel.

Step by Step :
16
Place the door latch trim against the door panel and install the Torx retaining screw with a Torx screwdriver. Plug in the electrical connector to the rear of the power door lock and power window switch. Push the switch into the hole on the door panel.

You can find instructions for checking tire pressure, reading treads for clues, and other work that you can do on your tires in the "Caring for Your Tires" section, later in this chapter. Tips for Buying Tires Before you rush out and buy a set of tires, you have a couple of other things to consider. Tire wear is affected by a number of factors besides construction: the condition of the vehicle's brake system and suspension system; inflation and alignment; driving and braking techniques; driving at high speeds, which raises tire temperatures and causes them to wear prematurely; how great a load you carry; road conditions; and climate. Here are some of the types of tires that you may want to consider: Basic all-season tires are standard equipment on most cars. The speed rating (see the "Speed rating" section earlier in the chapter) is usually S or T. If "M+S" (mud and snow) is printed on the sidewall, the tire will perform well in inclement weather without the need for snow tires. Touring tires are generally more expensive than basic all-season tires. Whether they're worth the money depends on the individual product. These tires usually are speed-rated S or T. Performance tires are designed for people who drive "aggressively." They perform better in terms of braking and cornering but are usually noisier and wear out more quickly. They are usually speed-rated H and have a wide, squatty profile. A QA Part III: Keeping Your Car in Good Condition, System by System 890 Car Insurance ford contour 1996 199433

Ultra-high performance tires have both the positive and the negative aspects of performance tires to a greater degree: They go faster, brake and handle better in wet and dry conditions, but ride less comfortably and wear out even faster. They are even wider and are usually speed-rated V or Z. * light-truck tires are intended for use on light trucks and SUVs. They come in a variety of styles designed for normal conditions, driving on- or off-road, or both. The thicker treads on the off-road variety offer better traction on unpaved surfaces. Light-truck tires also vary for carrying normal, heavy, and extra-heavy loads. Snow tires may be better than all-season tires for driving in mountainous areas with heavy snowfall, but they're noisy and don't handle as well on dry roads, so use them only when necessary. * "Run-flat" tires can be driven on without any air pressure inside the tire. Run-flat equipped vehicles may not even come with a jack or spare tire. (If you're driving a 1997 or newer Chevrolet Corvette or a similarly equipped new vehicle, you probably have this special type of radial tire.) The sidewalls have specially compounded inserts that prevent the tire from caving in when the tire loses air pressure. You can drive some run-flat tires up to 50 mph for 50 miles or more without further damaging the tire.

Smart . How do you Remove a Megan door panel?

*
Running on a run-flat at high speeds for a long period can damage them, so car manufacturers incorporate a warning system. For example, the Corvette has tire pressure sensors at each wheel so that the driver can be warned when one or more tires are flat. Because the driver can't feel any difference when a run-flat goes flat, a warning light illuminates on the instrument panel, signaling the driver to limit his or her driving speed and distance to avoid further damage to the tire or wheel. Before making a decision about a particular type of tire, take a close look at your driving habits: Are you hard on tires? If you tend to "burn rubber" when cornering, starting, and stopping, you know where that rubber comes from. A pair of cheaply made tires will wear out quickly, so buy the best quality you can afford. Do you drive a great deal and do most of your driving on high-speed free ways? A tire with a harder surface will take longer to wear out under these conditions. Do you drive a lot on unpaved rocky roads, carry heavy loads, or leave your car in the hot sun for long hours? You'll need higher-quality tires that

have the stamina to endure these challenges. What's the weather like in your area? Today, front-wheel drive vehicles with high-tech all-season tires get better traction than the old snow tires, which you had to replace when warm weather set in. However, if you drive under .Chapter 19: Checking Your Tires, Alignment, and Steering extreme conditions, you may want to check out tires designed for them: If it rains a lot, look for rain tires with super-wide grooves in the treads. For places with lots of snow or icy hills, look for "M+S" (mud and snow) on the sidewall. Do you drive mostly in local stop-and-go traffic, with many turns? Softer tires with wider treads will suit you best. How long do you intend to keep your car? Putting a pair of expensive tires on a vehicle that you intend to get rid of in 10,000 or 20,000 miles is foolish. Oh, it's possible to put well over 100,000 miles on a vehicle — especially if you maintain it properly — but if you have a relatively old vehicle with many miles on it already, and you don't intend to keep it very long, I wouldn't buy a pair of expensive mega-mile tires for it. Your car may surprise you and outlive its tires, but chances are that it won't. Similarly, it's foolish to put high-performance tires on a vehicle that will be driven mostly at normal speeds in city and highway traffic. On the other hand, if you intend to keep your vehicle for a few years, you'll save money in the long run by opting for more expensive, longer-lasting tires than "cheapos" or tires rated for less than 40,000 miles. Cheap tires wear out more quickly and cost more in the long run if you figure in the cost of buying, mounting, and balancing that second set. What's more, if you suffer a blowout or your tires fail to grip the road, you'll pay a great deal more if your vehicle — or you — is injured. If you drive only a couple of thousand miles a year, don't expect a pair of 40,000-mile radials to last forever. Rubber treads tend to rot eventually because of the ozone in the air, which causes cracks and hard spots in the sidewalls — a condition called ozone checking. For this reason, if you've used your tires for more than 40,000 miles, even if the treads are in good shape, have the tires checked to make sure that deteriorating rubber hasn't made them prone to blowouts and leaks. In addition to knowing which kind of tire is best for your car and understanding the tire codes (explained in the section called "The Secrets on Your Sidewalls, Revealed!"), keep the following tips in mind when you shop for tires: V You can find the proper tire size for your car in the owner's manual or on a sticker affixed to the vehicle. If neither exists, ask your dealer.
